Chief Oren Lyons On The Politics of Mother Earth
If you were in the religion class last term, you've watched this talk by Chief Lyons. I want his words to do a different thing this time, to focus your attention on the question of power, consensus, and peace.
Do a little homework: "Dr. Chief Oren Lyons is Faithkeeper and Chief of the Turtle Clan of the Onondaga Nation of the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, the Haudenosaunee or “People of the Longhouse” who uphold Gai Eneshah G’ Nah, the Great Law of Peace. He was raised in the traditional lifeways of the Iroquois on the Seneca and Onondaga reservations in central New York State." There is much in that short paragraph to understand -- what is a faithkeeper, what is the Great Law of Peace, what are the traditional lifeways of the Seneca and the Onondaga. Find out, at least a little, before listening to Chief Lyons' words. Learning about him is one way of respecting him, you see, and respect is always at the heart of peace. A transcript of an interview with Chief Lyons by Bill Moyers from 1991 can be opened HERE. [Warning: it is somewhat oddly formatted so you will need to either print it or rotate the pages on your screen.]
